So as another day winds to a close, I will share a rather interesting conversation I had with my dear old dad. See, my father is a huge baseball fan. As many of you know baseball has some lingo that can be hard to understand for even the most rabid baseball fan. For example, the term hit and run. I mean what the heck??? When my dad was explaining this to me I promptly told him "If the runner takes off as the pitcher is throwing the ball, and then the batter swings to protect the stealing base runner shouldn't it be called the run and hit?" To this my dad could only reply "Asher, I can't tell you why exactly but it is just called the hit and run o.k." Hey who I am I to argue my dad has loved baseball for over 30 years. From here my dad continued talking baseball. The topic came around to the JV baseball team he spends so much time coaching. He told me that the team had some talent but they just weren't picking each other up. I thought "Dad I only weigh 13 pounds 8 ounces and you struggle picking me up" I did not dare say this after questioning the sanctity of the term hit and run. Instead I simply asked "Why" He said he couldn't quite put his finger on it. So then I asked to explain what he meant by "Not picking each other up" He broke it down for me like this. Picking each other up is when you go out of your way to help someone. To this I laughed which never ceases to get a smile out of my beautiful mom or dad or heck come to think of it darn near anybody. Dad smiled and said Asher to pick up a teammate is what makes baseball a team game. Sure no one is up there to help you when you are batting. However, if you grab their hat and glove and tell them "nice try, you will get them next time" after making the third out of an inning, then maybe just maybe they will be a little more likely to make the next play hit to them in the field or even get a hit in their next at bat. So before I lay my head to sleep I ask anyone reading this blog to Pick someone up because you never know when you will need someone to pick you up. Oh and I almost forgot Thank you Grandma Boylan for playing with me all day and Thank you Nana for coming and loving on me tomorrow. My Mom and Dad wanted me to send a sincere thank you to all those that pick them up. For this they are truly grateful. Good night before I start drooling on the keyboard.
